The Expeller Machine Squeezes the Peanuts to make Organic Peanut Oil

Expeller pressed oil is any sort of oil that has been extracted from nuts and seeds through a mechanical process that relies on sheer force rather than chemicals. In more ancient times, oil expulsion was done by hand, often with mallets or crank-style apparatuses. Most modern machines are far more advanced and are able to expel quite a lot of peanut oil in a short period of time. Using an expeller still tends to be less efficient than extracting peanut oils through chemical means, but many people believe that it is healthier and more environmentally conscious to avoid harsh additives, particularly in peanut oils designated for human consumption.

How the Expeller Works

The basic idea behind Expeller Pressed or Screw Pressed oil is to force oil out of something — usually a nut, a seed — without using anything but mechanical strength. Most expeller machines are set up so that the peanut is placed between two heavy metal plates. When turned on, the machine will typically rotate those plates, progressively pressing the peanut harder and harder.  Any peanut oil that is released during this process is caught in a runoff tray, where it is filtered and collected for later use.

Mechanically Pressed and Cold Pressed peanut oils are extracted by an Expeller Pressed or Screw Pressed Oil machine.

Mechanical extraction is how things were done for centuries. Applying heavy pressure to peanut seeds until oil starts seeping out. An expeller is a big screw that is tightened until it crushes the nut/seed and causes the oil to run.

Mechanical pressing creates high temperatures, especially when squeezing hard peanuts. This usually happens when working with automatic machinery in high volume. The issue with high temperatures is that they change the flavor and significantly reduces the natural aroma of the peanut oil.

Mechanically Pressed peanut oils generate temperatures greater than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.  Therefore through this process, most of the the flavor and majority of the natural peanut aroma is lost. Mechanically Pressed peanut oil has a very light peanut aroma smell.

Cold Pressed and Mechanically Pressed peanut oils are extracted by an Expeller Pressed or Screw Pressed Oil machine.

Cold pressed peanut oil is oil which has been produced with the use of low temperature heat techniques. The introduction of heat to the process of making peanut oil will degrade the flavor, nutritional value, and color of the oil. For this reason, cold pressed peanut oil tends to be of higher quality and more expensive.  Cold pressed peanut oil retain all of its flavor and aroma, and contain natural antioxidants that help prevent oil oxidation.

Cold pressed methods also use an expeller machine, but only in a temperature-controlled setting. When the machine’s plates rotate and press and squeezes the peanuts, a certain amount of heat is generated through friction, which the cold pressed method seeks to minimize.

The best peanut oils are cold pressed.  Although pressing and grinding produces heat through friction, the temperature must not rise above 120°F for any  peanut oil to be considered cold pressed.  Cold Pressed peanut oil has a heavy peanut aroma smell.

Dr. George Washington Carver and Dr. Austin Curtis working together in Tuskegee Institute's Laboratory
Carver Knew there was something special about the peanut. Carver's research proved that the chemical makeup of the peanut was special

Dr. Austin W. Curtis worked with Dr. George Washington Carver at Tuskegee Institute for the last eight years of Carver's life on earth. They developed a father/son type of relationship.  So much so, Dr. George Washington Carver gave Dr. Austin Curtis his most popular invention, the Peanut Rubbing Oil formula.  Carver told Curtis to sell the Peanut Rubbing Oil with his (Carver) picture on it.  Dr. Curtis did just that and started Curtis Labs in Detroit in the late 1940's after Carver died.  Dr. Curtis sold many of Dr. Carver's peanut based cosmetics products.  Dr. Curtis also learned allot from Dr. Carver.  Dr. Curtis had a formal education in the field of chemistry which allowed Dr. Curtis to enhance some of Carver's formulas.
