The Original Tuskegee Dirt Shirt

The process used in coloring the "Original Dirt Shirt" is the same process George Washington Carver used to make his paints from the pigments of the clay or dirt in Tuskegee.  These dirt shirts which are made in Tuskegee is a tribute in commemorating the legacy of George Washington Carver. The original Tuskegee Dirt Shirt is a tribute commemorating the legacy of George Washington Carver.  Carver spent the majority of his life working as a botanist and a chemist at Tuskegee Institute (Tuskegee University).  Carver dedicated most of his life trying to reach "The Man Farthest Down" (The Blackman).  The same clay that is used to color the Tuskegee Dirt Shirt is the same clay that Carver used to make paint for homes in and around Tuskegee.  During World War I, he found a way to replace the textile dyes formerly imported from Europe.  He produced dyes of 500 different shades.  All of his findings in terms of dyes came from Tuskegee soil, and the same rich soil remains intact today.  This soil is used in the processing of the original Tuskegee Dirt Shirt.

Details on The Original Tuskegee Dirt Shirts

Tuskegee's red dirt is famous not only for its tenacity to stick to anything that it comes in contact with but also for some unique uses it has been put to.  George Washington Carver used it to make wonderful dyes for fabrics.  He also created beautiful pastel paintings from these natural pigments.  Many of the older houses and buildings in Tuskegee were constructed with red clay bricks made by the students at Tuskegee Institute.  Isaac Hathaway, a renowned artist, actually created china plates, bust, and other art objects from this versatile clay.  Washing The Original Tuskegee Dirt Shirt will cause the color to bleed initially and fade slightly, which is why we suggest pre-washing separately in cold water before wearing.
